And there, the casserole, I think of Eve out of Adam’s rib, (another riddle of biblical quote!) and that we need a spouse and each other, because it is TOGETHER that we will win, and precisely, my husband has just returned from work and food shopping, which reminds me of the importance of continuing to stock up and having faith to push the mountain scenery (another riddle of biblical quotation!), with the mustard seed, which has become a gigantic plant, which I see myself putting at the foot of the mountain scenery that I push, so easily, with this intention of prayer to the Precious Blood of Jesus that I say these days every morning, so that He may cover my husband, my relatives, close to my loved ones and me, my publications and communications to come, so no need for audio readings of Bible verses at night, because the Precious Blood of Jesus gives me a gigantic confidence and joy!

Have you seen Elysium? Directed by Neill Blomkamp, this science fiction film depicts the Earth in 2154, overcrowded, ravaged, devastated. Its inhabitants survive with difficulty, while an orbital station, named Elysium, Noah’s ark for the privileged, offers a wonderful life, free from diseases, to a small overprotected, ultra-rich human elite. The film revolves around a hero, played by Matt Damon, whose role is to save miserable humanity, by giving free access to Elysium. But the most interesting thing about this story lies, in our opinion, in the anticipation dimension of the film. What Elysium shows is that one of the projects of the elite of the future, – the small layer of economic decision-makers whose eyes are only on the future – is, in the long run, to abandon this planet and the humanity that has remained desperately attached to it.

Many among the « power elite » of which C. Wright Mills referred in his book of the same name are now aware of the disasters to come.

So they try to offer themselves a way out, in order to escape the ultimate disaster. For some worried billionaires the project is to buy an island, for others a bunker, for all a kind of new Thebaid, safe from men. Still others are turning their eyes to the « starry sky » in the hope of colonizing Mars, this is particularly the case of SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company and Amazon, the company created and led by Jeff Bezos that invests heavily in a space transport company Blue Origin.
SpaceX or the anti Star Trek
Infused with transhumanism, bottled up with elitism 2.0, fed with neoliberal and scientistic prospectivism, Elon Musk’s futuristic thinking, like that of the Amazon executive, is entirely turned towards the idea of leaving for Mars, as quickly as possible. But it is clear that, in this journey to the new space Eldorado, there will be many called and few elected. Elon Musk’s rockets, his « Falcon » series, nor Jeff Bezos’ intergalactic travel plans, despite their benevolent protests, are democratic. It is, from a perfectly eugenic, Malthusian perspective, to save the power elite – who obviously think they are the elite of humanity. No humanist dimension in this project. Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos – who are fully aware of the limits and dangers associated with the development of contemporary wild capitalism – exploit their payroll in order to save a few « happy few », a few billionaires, a few handpicked scientists, a few pretty girls too – we must have fun and ensure the survival of the species – a « sample » in any case of what these « entrepreneurs of the future » consider the best of humanity.
We are far from the ideal conveyed by the Star Trek series, with its famous Captain Kirk, its inenorable Mr. Spock or its unforgettable Dr. McCoy. By way of teleportation we will teleport to Mars a handpicked humanity. Compared to the spirit of rapprochement between peoples conveyed by the intergalactic series of the 60s, we can say that we travel with the projects of SpaceX or the « Pathway to Mars » Program developed by NASA absolutely in the opposite direction. Because with these companies and these programs, it is not a question of going to meet new worlds or of bringing together the different representatives of the peoples on the same ship, as on Captain Kirk’s Enterprise , but rather of abandoning the peoples, of abandoning even the human species. SpaceX’s 7 million followers will never go to Mars, they will die on Earth.
This would undoubtedly leave Mr Spock, the Venusian without emotion, cold, rational, calculating, but for us who see the establishment of a scenario of growth of the future that excludes the totality of humanity from its development project and is even preparing to abandon it to its sad fate, there is something deeply disturbing here.
Growth in Space and Hermann Kahn
But this model of spatial growth is actually a model of alienated and alienating growth, neo-Malthusian in essence. Because, the more growth develops in space, the less meaning growth on Earth makes. Contrary to what Herman Kahn predicted, the relationship between growth « feet on the ground » and « on the way to space » is not a relationship of complementarity but a relationship of disjunction, of bifurcation. In the spirit of the « elite of the future » one is at the expense of the other. To be even more precise, one is done without thinking about the other other other than through the return of actuarial rates. Growth in space, oriented towards the future, therefore takes place without taking into consideration sustainable growth in the long term, « feet on the ground », nor the safeguarding of humanity. The idea is therefore as follows: to make the maximum profits in the short term by accelerating the system of production and exchange everywhere on the planet – without taking into account its environmental and social costs or its risks of military confrontation – to build as quickly as possible the ships that will allow the « elite of the future » to fly into space in order to form space islands of survival, on Mars in particular. Mars is in a way Elon Musk’s Elysium, his orbital station, the one where he hopes one day, as he says himself, « to land without crashing ».
This is why Elon Musk, with his « 21 million followers » has set himself the goal of « improving the reliability of access to space by a factor of 10 », wants to develop a Martian colonial carrier, called Mars Colonial Transporter, as well as a whole space flight system with force launch vehicles and other space capsules. No philanthropy in all this. Behind the model of « transhumanist space growth » developed by Elon Musk, there is the one theorized by Herman Kahn, of growth « on the way to space ». The whole evolves in a Malthusian, eugenic direction, of abandonment of the weakest, quite simply. In this sense, the statements of the boss of SpaceX according to which by 2035, a million people could be transported on gigantic ships in order to colonize Mars, are pure and simple jokes. SpaceX, which is valued on the market to the tune of $ 21 billion does not need to create mass transport in space, it is enough that a few billionaires pay to make the trip – as proposed a few years ago by another billionaire, Richard Branson, the ex-boss of Virgin – and « everything will go for the best in the best of all possible worlds », that of the business of space and the future. Donald Trump, moreover, has understood this well, he who has asked that we accelerate the « PathWay to Mars » program and who wants NASA to reach Mars directly without going through the intermediate journey to the Moon.
Elysium and The Death of the Earth
While the transhumanist elite dreams of the future and intergalactic travel, the scenario of one of the most famous but also the darkest French anticipatory authors, J.-H. Rosny Aîné (1856-1940). The author of The War of Fire has written many books and among them, one of those that seems to have the most topicality, The Death of the Earth (1910). The anticipatory-fiction novel tells the story of a couple who advance on a parched planet Earth, in the grip of violent seismic convulsions, made almost desert by human overexploitation. But the narrative not only tells the story of Earth’s death, it also tells the last moments of humanity. Of this humanity that thought, with the help of its super-powerful technology, to master all the parameters of its environment, but which ends up disappearing with it. However, the twilight scenario of The Death of the Earth appears to be the indispensable complement to that of Elysium. The colossal energy deployed – both materially and intellectually – to build our journey to Mars is the one we desperately lack to think about sustainable development and shared growth « feet on the ground ». The construction of Elon Musk’s Elysium will therefore have as a corollary the destruction of the Earth’s environment abandoned to itself. The spatial survivalism of a few billionaires is already taking place to the detriment of the survival of humanity whose ecosystem is ravaged by the hyper-accelerated development model.
Contrary to what happens in the Hollywood film where Matt Damon manages to seize Elysium to save humanity, it is the reflection of Targ, the last man, dying hero of Rosny Elder, which is rather coming true: « The Planet let man prosper: his reign was the fiercest, the most powerful – and the last. He was the prodigious destroyer of life. The forests died and their hosts countless, every beast was exterminated or degraded. And there was a time when subtle energies and dark minerals themselves seemed slaves; the victor captured to the mysterious force that assembled the atoms. – This very frenzy announced the death of the Earth…, the death of the earth for our Kingdom! ». The death of the Earth so… unless the people wake up, take back their destinies in their own hands, reorient the entire economic system towards shared growth, sustainable because it is slowed down. Unless they decide to end, once and for all, the projects of Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos and other Elon Musk.
